Coronation Celebrations

On Saturday April Ist, a meeting was held{ in the Public Library Hall, to discuss what steps should be taken in order to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King George. Mr. Jabez Becket proposed, and Mr. J. Hill seconded, that the Vicar (Rev. C. Bass), be appointed chairman of this, the public meeting. This was carried unanimously. Mr. J. Collingridge than prom:reed, and it Will unanimously resolved, that Coronation day, June 22nd, be fittingly sad adequately observed in the village. Mr. J. Beckett proposed that the children of 1 ted the village be provided with a tea. Mr. J. T. Read seconded, and sugges that ail children under the age of 15 years be entertained. This was carried. An animated but good-hamonred discussion took place as to the other arrangements. It was generally felt by those present that some permanent memorial of the occasion should be insisted upon. Two proposals were discussed, viz., the re-hanging of the bells of the parish church, and the provision of a public bier, which had long sluce become an argent matter. In reply to unfavourable criticisms of the 1 latter proposal, it, was maintained that such a memento of the coronation of the late King Edward VII. was adopted in the neighbourhood. Tne subject of a tea or dinner the older folk was discussed, when the feeling was expressed that in the event of a dinners being provided, each adult should contribute, in order that the whole of die funds collected might not be exhausted. It was agreed that the nature of the per memorial should be left over until subscriptions bad beou eelleoted, when another public meeting would be held. It was, however decided upon the proposition of Mr..l. T. Read, seconded by Mr. Jsbez Beckett, that Dr. Benson’s suggestion be adopted, which was that half the money be devoted to providing a holiday programme in the village on June 22nd, and that one hall be devoted to a permanent memorial. A committee was then formed, consisting of the Parish Council, the Council Managers, and the Library Committee, with the addition of the following ladies sod geutlomen :- :1,0 Vicar, and Messrs W. Tompkins, J. Kire’….,er, J. Woodfield. A. J. Cox, J. Hill, H. Jai-1. T. Bear, J. Finches, and J. J. Broome ; and Mrs. Benson, Miss Smith, bliss Grace, and Miss Faulkner. It was further decided that eleven members of the Committee should form a quorum, and tbst the next meeting take place on Monday April 10th, at 7.30 p.m.
