St Michael’s Debating Society

The last meeting of the session took place on Monday evening. April 3rd, at 7 o’clock, in the Public Library. About forty members were present, this number being much below the average attendance. Mr. B. Inns was unanimously voted to the chair. No fixed subject of discussion had been arranged, and the programme consisted of short impromptu debates upon subjects selected that evening, none of the speakers however choosing his own subject. Those dealt with were : (a) Should maids know something of the characters of the mistresses seeking their services ; this subject was humourously and sympathically dealt with by Colonel Hubbard. (b) The advantages of the Budget of 1908 opened by Mr. A. Rogers. (o) The importance of modern inventions, ably opened by Mr. J. Morton. (d) Are teetotalers minded ? A subject judiciously handled by Mr. J. T. Read. (e) Does the House of Commons need rtr forming ? Answered in the affirmative by Mr. B. Jones, who suggested that more working men, in touch with the needs and aspirations of their tallow’, should be admitted. (f) Would arbitration benedt toe ~ shuns ? opened by Mr. G. Blake, who observe , ‘ that this subject was of an importance transceuding all others ; and (g) Is this Society of benefit to the village ? Decided in an emphatic affirmative by all who discussed the subject., These gatherings are a source of pleasure to many in the village, and the debates are followed with the keenest interest. Each session the number of those taking part in the discussions increases, and a list of the subjects discussed since the birth of the society about five years ago would show wide and varied Interests of those who open,And participate in the &mations.
