Florence NIGHTINGALE

Steeple Claydon

In the 1960s the village under the patronage of Sir Harry Verney, wanted to mark the influence that his great step-aunt, Florence Nightingale had on the area.(With the help of Sir Harry’s grandfather an MP) . She pressed for laws on drainage and sewerage in the country. These were implemented in the Claydon’s area. She also helped to set up the village libraries contributing £50.00 to the Steeple Claydon one. A garden and swimming pool were the original ideas and the money was raised by asking nurses world wide to donate too This was unfortunately not possible as one or two of the larger donors from outside the village failed to come up with their money and the garden scheme had to be abandoned. Instead a clock was put up in the style of the time
