ALONE IN COTTAGE

Edward John Thomas Hodges, employed at the London Brick Company’a works at Calvert, said that he was single man and lived at a cottage, No. 4, West Street, adjoining the cottage occupied hv the previous witness. Witness said that on April ‘JGth he had purchased cigarettes, the number being made of two twenty packets of Players – Weights and four ten packets of Woodbines. He took ton Woodbines out the Saturday and placed the remainder in drawer at about 7 p.m. Before going out, he placed his wallet in his jacket. At that time he had in his wallet, made up of eight pound notes and two 10s. notes. During the morning wit ness si>ent ss. He used ss. from one of the 10s. notes. He returned to his home at al>out 9.16 p.m. and retired bed at 9.30 p.m. He placed the ss. in change, ready for the morning, on the shelf in his living room. He checked the remainder of the notes, which were J6B 10s. These were in witness’s wallet, which ho placed the hip pocket of his trousers. Witness hung his blue jacket in the living room and placed his trousers on the bottom rail of his bed. During the night he got up about 11.30 p.m. and went downstairs. returning he shot an outer downstairs door, hut di<l not bar it. ………….…to be continued
