SUMMER OUTING

Under the auspice* the Bletchley Brandi and Steeple Claydon Sub-Branch tli£ National Union Raiiwaymen, a very successful picnic was held at Steeple Claydon Saturday, June 27th. The proceedings opened with a cricket match, played on the cricket ground (by kind permission) between teams representing the Calvert Brickworks and the joint branches of the N.U.R. Those responsible for the contingent were unfortunate in not being able to bring several who had been depended upon, and it was clear that some of the players did not represent very high class cricket, and the N.U.R. team, which batted first, only secured run-. J. Hill (9) being the highest scorer. The Brickworks’ team ran out easy winners with runs to their credit, but the opening of the inning- did not promise very much, 2 wickets being down for 0, for 1, 4 for 1, 5 for 11, 6 for 13, for 14; but A. T. Hodges (14), J. George (17), M. Elliott (not out, 15), and F. Hall (25) put different complexion on things, and the was a- stated. The Calvert Brass Band was in attendance, and rendered selections during the afternoon, which added very much to the pleasure of the company present. Tea was provided in the Public Hall, to which 215 sat down, and came away very satisfied, if we may judge by the remarks heard. Mr. F. Gamble added a very pleasing touch with his fancy costume, banjo and songs. The sports for children were taken with enthusiasm, the sack race for boys being run off in four heats and a final, and proved very amusing. The tug-of-war, too, was very keenly contested. Bletchley A team beat the Claydon Raiiwaymen; the Brickworks’ team boat Bletchley B team; final. Brickworks’ team beat Bletchley A team. The proceedings concluded with on open-air meeting, which was addres-ed by Mr. J. Hieatt, of the Workers’ Union, and Mr. W. Carter, of the N.U.R.
